65,000 WOMEN BENEFITED FROM LAGOS EMPOWERMENT INITIATIVES, ACCORDING TO THE COMMISSIONER.
65,000 women have benefited from empowerment programs in the state, according to Mrs. Bolaji Dada, the Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
The
commissioner revealed this at the 21st WIMBIZ Annual Conference, where she was
a panelist and the topic was "Firing Forward: The Future in Focus."
Before
she took office, the majority of the empowerment programs ran just once a year,
according to Dada, but she had them scheduled to run four times instead.
"Before
I took office, the bulk of the state's empowerment programs only ran once a
year. I knew that I needed to alter that because how many people can benefit
from a program that only runs once a year?
For
instance, the Micro-Enterprise Support Scheme currently runs four times a year
and has so far been effective in empowering 8,885 women.
A
total of 2,750 women have benefited so far from the state's free medical exams
for women after it was determined that the majority of women do not pay
attention to their bodies.
"Over
65,000 women have benefited overall from our collective empowerment programs
throughout the state," the statement reads.
Dada
participated in the fourth plenary session along with four other women:
Funmilayo Arowoogun, president of the NECA Network of Entrepreneurial Women;
Beatrice Eyong, UN Women representative in Nigeria and ECOWAS; Meridian
Maskara; and Oludayo Sanya, executive secretary of the MTN Nigeria Foundation,
who presided over the discussion.
